Amtrak tickets are refundable, but in some cases only in a limited time period based on the type of ticket you purchased. See below for the deadlines to get a full refund on your original form of payment. In all cases, you must cancel before the train departure to get either a refund or a 75% credit on an online voucher that you must use within a year. Additionally, there are no change fees, so you can change your ticket vs cancel it to not lose funds.
To get your refund, you can go to “Modify Trip” on the Amtrak website, call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) or go to an Amtrak station with a ticket office. If you received a paper Amtrak ticket, it must be returned in order to get your refund.
Cancel your saver fare ticket within 24 hours of purchase to get a full refund.
Cancel your ticket within eight days to get a full refund for reserved tickets. However, unreserved coach tickets incur 25% fee an hour or more after purchase.
